Original build sheet within our archives indicates that the car was worked hard during its early years: new brake pads fitted within the first 5,000 miles and then five replacement clutches, four gearboxes, one rear axle, one pair of rear shock absorbers, brakes overhauled, new ’head gasket and manifold gasket – all within the first 16,000 miles!
Desmond Smail renovation in 1994 including body repairs (new inner/outer sills, new rear valance, repairs to door frames and new door skins) followed by a strip and full preparation for a re-spray in original Sierra Blue metallic. A new headlining was fitted at this time
Sold to previous owner in October 1997 – Desmond Smail was commissioned to carry out another major restoration, this time to include the engine, drive-train and running gear. Engine rebuild (by R S Williams) to ‘unleaded’ specification, up-rated alternator, negative-earth electrics, stainless-steel exhaust system, silicone coolant hoses, Kenlowe electric fan and 130/90watt halogen headlamps, the latter to compensate for loss through the Plexiglas headlight covers. The original radio was retained and converted to FM reception.
Re-trimmed in oatmeal Connolly leather with dark blue Wilton carpets by Joe Dorril and June Kitchner, both of whom had originally trimmed the car at the factory! The suspension was completely rebuilt and converted at the rear to Leda shock absorbers, replacing the original Selectaride, while the brakes likewise were comprehensively overhauled and fitted with competition pads and copper pipes. A limited-slip differential was fitted as part of the rear axle rebuild
