1985 BMW M635 CSi

The E24 generation BMW 6 series remains one of the most iconic BMW designs of all time and was an instant hit when launched in 1976, replacing the previous E9 generation as BMW’s flagship two door coupe sports model.

Penned by the Belgian automotive artisan Paul Bracq whose design portfolio included the Mercedes SL “Pagoda’ and uber luxurious Mercedes 600, the shape and detail of the E24 truly defined BMW style and remained in production until 1990 when it was replaced by the E31 8 Series

Initially offered with launch models 630 CS and 633 CSi powered by six cylinder engines of 3.0L and 3.2L respectively, the Bavarian manufacturer introduced the 635 CSi in 1978 with a more powerful 3.5L engine which proved a highly successful racing car in the European Touring Car Championship, much like the previous generation E9 3.0 CS/CSL models

The flagship model of the E24 range was undoubtedly the M635 CSi that was introduced in 1984, developed by the BMW Motorsport division and fitted with the powerful 24 valve 3453cc M88 engine as used in the legendary BMW M1.

Unsurprisingly the M635 CSi provided supercar levels of performance with its 286 BHP motor, achieving 0-60 MPH in six seconds and 158 MPH top speed, with superb handling to match and capable of carrying four passengers and luggage in comfort

Total production of M635 CSi was 5855 cars produced between 1984 and 1989, badged M6 for the US market and slightly detuned to comply with federal emissions, the most powerful and desirable were the European specification M88 engined cars. The model was facelifted for the final two years of production with the ‘Highline’ model that featured extended leather on the dashboard and doors with subtle bodywork revisions

This pre-highline example was constructed in March 1985 and is the sixty fifth RHD example from a total of 524 RHD M635 CSi models. Constructed to UK RHD specification and one of approximately three hundred examples delivered new to the UK

Originally finished in Polaris Silver coachwork with special order Recaro front seats trimmed in Black buffalo leather and optioned with a sunroof and air conditioning, it’s understood just 41 RHD examples were finished in this colour

Delivered to main agent Harry Fairbairn of Glasgow, the car was originally used for demonstration purposes before being sold to first owner Peter Macarthur of Hamilton and registered ‘C717 JYS’ on 21^st February 1986.

Maintained throughout Mr Macarthers’s ownership by the supplying dealer, the car was acquired by second owner Mr Terence Charles Thomas Fowler of Sheffield in the summer of 1990 at approximately 50,000 miles and assigned cherished registration ‘TC 63’.

The car remained in the UK until March 1995 when Mr Fowler relocated to Jersey and  took his beloved M635 CSi with him, shortly after it was assigned with Jersey registration ‘J80642’.

The extensive service records and original service book that accompany the car detail fastidious and regular maintenance throughout Fowlers ownership by Royal Ascot Garage BMW main agents, Le Riche Automobile restorers in Jersey, Cooks Ferry Engineering and marque specialists Munich Legends

Invoices on file from Munich Legends in October 2006 at 79,046 miles detail the all important timing chain replacement with a strip down of the engine and cylinder head, new valve oil stem seals, crankshaft sprocket, new timing chain and oil pump chain, engine reassembly with all new gaskets, o rings, seals and replacement of engine ancillaries amongst other works

Further invoices from ML in March 2012 detail a full braking system rebuild and upgrade to E31 840Ci specification in addition to regular annual servicing and a replacement fuel tank fitted in January 2017, shortly before the M635 was repatriated to the UK in June of that year at 87,020 miles and sold one month later to third owner Timothy Haden Scott of Purley

The M635 remained with Mr Haden Scott for the next four years covering just 1500 miles before it was sold via The Classic Car Company of Wandsworth, London, to fourth owner in February 2021 to sit alongside a matching Polaris Silver E28 M5

Both cars were featured in a seven-page road test by Classic and Sportscar in October 2022, a copy of which is included within the file. During his ownership maintenance continued with Munich Legends including a replacement AC condenser and pusher fan in October 2021and serviced by Riemans in October 2023 at 89,365 miles

In March 2025 a comprehensive inspection was undertaken by marque specialists BMR Performance, who had known the car for many years which confirmed the car was in excellent overall mechanical and structural condition.

Following the inspection a new set of Michelin TRX tires were fitted along with a new Blaupunkt Bremen DAB radio (in the style of the original) with new amp and speakers. In May 2025 BMR Performance fitted a new radiator, coolant hoses, expansion tank and cap, thermostat and alternator bushes as well as complete new Supersprint exhaust system

Without doubt one of the most well maintained RHD M635 models that exists today with extensive history as outlined below, original book pack and service book, original brochure, original warranty card, two sets of keys and original tool kit
