History
This magnificent MG Magnette ‘AUO 889’ was originally constructed as a 4-seat N Type Magnette tourer and was extensively campaigned in the hands of first owner F.W. Fox, competing in the Brooklands Trial, Lands End Trial, London Edinburgh Trial and numerous other MCC Events, many of which are supported by a huge collection of pre-war photos depicting the cars exploits, the list of which is outlined below and is further documented in Motorsport Magazine reports of the period
- MCC London-Edinburgh Trial – Whitsun May 1936
- MGCC Abingdon May 1936
- MCC Lands End Trial 1936
- MCC Brooklands October 1936
- MCC Edinburgh Trial June 1937
- MGCC Abingdon May 1937
- Lands End Trial 1937
Like so many cars of the time the interruption of the war caused the car to fall into derelict condition and it was later acquired by a noted UK MG collecting family in 1967 where it remained within their ownership until c2014, having been extensively rebuilt over a ten year period between 2004-2014 by the grandson of the family, himself a highly experienced and qualified vintage car restorer and racer
During the restoration many additional qualified specialists were involved including the mechanics by Baynton Jones and Barry Foster whence the car received a fully counter-balanced crank, Carillo pattern rods and forged pistons, lightened flywheel and full head rebuild.
It was at this time that the brakes were uprated to K series 13inch brakes with Alfin drums and hydraulically operated ensuring the MG stops extremely well. An original manual close-ratio gearbox was retained for power saving in favour of a heavy pre-select box and a Marshall 85 supercharger and HV8 SU carburettor were nose-mounted to the beautifully hand-crafted Aluminium pointed tail K3 pattern body with Brooklands outside exhaust, full race dashboard with mostly period gauges, switches, Ki-gass pump and twin tank fillers
In recent years the car has become a regular sight at vintage car events, competing in many rallies and race meetings, achieving second place in the recent Betty Haig Memorial Trophy amongst other documented successes in the many VSCC & MG Car Club racing events which it has participated in. The recent ‘rolling road’ report confims a staggering 120 bhp at the wheels and 141bhp at the engine from the 1500cc bore, resulting in scintillating performance
The car is presented in excellent road trim suitable for all sorts of competitive events, tough touring rallies such as the ‘Flying Scotsman’ or just fun fast road use. It is a thoroughly vintage and exciting driving experience and not for the feint-hearted. The car is finished in deep red cellulose with black leather bucket seats, and full tonneau cover, 19’’ wire wheels shod with Dunlop Race tyres all round
A huge history file accompanies the car, together with race records, VSCC eligibility card, many pre-war photographs and accompanying Motorsport Magazine excepts proving its pedigree, current DVLA paperwork maintaining its original registration and two folders of rebuild invoices detailing the extensive preparation and expenditure to create the wonderful example it is today
Fully serviced in August 2023 including engine oil (Castrol R), gearbox oil, diff oil, brake fluid and rebuilt starter motor, the MG has also just returned from a differential rebuild with racing specialists CKL in Battle who fitted a new bespoke crown wheel and pinion during the rebuild
Without question one of the most exciting vintage cars we have ever driven and certainly one of the most beautiful, there is no way that one could acquire a car with similar proven pre-war history and build to this specification today for anything like the sensible price we are offering it for today!
